KS2 Maths (Year 6 SATs Preparation)

Designed for Upper KS2 learners, this programme focuses on consolidating prior learning, strengthening exam technique, and building confidence for the end-of-Key Stage 2 SATs. Through structured small group teaching, children develop accuracy, resilience, and the ability to apply mathematical knowledge under exam conditions.

Day: Saturday (Term-time only)

Time: 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Preparing for SATs and Beyond

Our Year 6 Mathematics Programme provides focused preparation for Key Stage 2 SATs while ensuring children develop the understanding and confidence needed for a successful transition to secondary school. Rather than teaching to the test alone, the programme strengthens the mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills that underpin long-term success.

Across the academic year, children revisit and consolidate all key areas of the Key Stage 2 curriculum, including number, calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. Alongside developing fluency, lessons provide regular opportunities to apply learning through reasoning and multi-step problem-solving questions similar to those found in SATs assessments.

As SATs approach, children become increasingly familiar with exam-style questions, effective strategies and time management, helping them approach assessments with confidence. After SATs, the programme continues to reinforce key concepts and introduce mathematical thinking that supports a smooth transition into secondary education.

What Your Child Will Learn

Our Year 6 programme prepares children for success in Key Stage 2 SATs while strengthening the mathematical understanding needed for secondary school. Learning focuses on securing core knowledge, improving arithmetic fluency and developing confidence when tackling reasoning and problem-solving questions.

Key areas include:

• Number and calculation

• Fractions, decimals and percentages

• Ratio and proportion

• Algebra

• Geometry

• Measurement

• Statistics

• SATs reasoning and arithmetic strategies

Example Learning Objectives

Children may learn to:

• Solve multi-step reasoning problems

• Use efficient written and mental calculation methods

• Calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages

• Solve ratio and algebra questions

• Interpret and solve geometry problems

• Improve arithmetic speed and accuracy

• Apply mathematical knowledge confidently in SATs-style questions

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Each session is designed to develop both confidence and exam readiness.

Children will:

• Complete arithmetic fluency practice.

• Review previous learning through retrieval activities.

• Learn new concepts through teacher modelling.

• Apply skills using guided and independent practice.

• Complete reasoning and SATs-style questions.

• Review common misconceptions and discuss effective problem-solving strategies.

As SATs approach, lessons include increasing opportunities to practise timed questions, helping children become familiar with exam expectations while maintaining a calm and supportive learning environment.
